Are there also signs asking the public not to fly kites or model aeroplanes?

     Nope.
However, it IS odd that the island is half French
and half Dutch but the warning signs are in .... English.

The Dutch half of the island only uses the Dutch language in official
matters. Most of the population only speak English. Besides: it is only a
matter of being a good host. Would you understand a sign that says:
GEVAAR

says:
"GEVAAR
Straalwinden veroorzaakt door vertrekkende en aankomende vliegtuigen kunnen
zwaar lichamelijk letsel veroorzaken, resulterend in extreem blijvend letsel
en/of de dood."
